Lead-up to Classic deserves a boost

RACING Queensland needs to seize an opportunity to showcase the Gold Coast meeting a week before the Magic Millions and make a genuine feature race out of the two-year-old event.

Sunlight's Magic Millions win again showcased what a successful lead-up that 1100m race is.

It's the third time in four years the Millions winner has come from the Gold Coast lead-up the Saturday prior following Houtzen and Le Chef.

Not bad for a nondescript $60,000 race. Surely, given its recent results, the race is entitled to be given a sizeable purse increase and used as a drawcard on that day. That Gold Coast pre-Millions meeting needs a kick along.

It has lost the Bat Out Of Hell to a date later in the calendar and falling a week after the big Bernborough meeting at Doomben, it's in a difficult spot to attract good horses.

The two-year-old presents an option to correct that and not just be a last-ditch qualifier, but a race worth aiming at.

Clearly the one week back-up into the Millions is proving a winning formula.

Kelso Wood also did the same with 2013 winner Real Surreal, meaning it's four of the past six off seven days.

Tony McEvoy made the point on Saturday the run a week before probably played in his filly's favour on the score of fitness when it became a brutal speed from the outset.

On the subject of that Coast meeting, the club can also embrace the casual demeanour of the entire Millions week by dressing down and making it a real family day. Perhaps a board shorts and thongs theme would do the trick?

A good percentage of the crowd would have given a tick to that suggestion as temperatures soared on Saturday.
