MEDIA mogul Oprah Winfrey is having second thoughts about running for US president - thanks to Donald Trump.

The TV legend told Bloomberg interviewer David Rubenstein that before Trump won the November election, she thought she wasn't qualified to lead America.

"I actually never thought that that was - I never considered the question, even a possibility," the 63-year-old said.

Rubenstein responded, "Right, because it's clear that you don't need government experience to be elected president of the United States, right?"

"That's what I thought," Winfrey replied. "I thought, 'Oh gee, I don't have the experience, I don't know enough.' Now I'm thinking, 'Oh, oh.'"

Trump's rapid political ascent shocked the world. Despite never holding public office, the billionaire property developer and TV host triumphed over longtime politician Hillary Clinton at last year's election.

Winfrey was a Clinton supporter and also stumped for President Barack Obama when he was on the campaign trail.

During the interview, Winfrey also revealed that many of her friends thought she would fail when she was hired to host A.M. Chicago in 1984 because she would be competing with veteran host Phil Donahue.

"It didn't matter to me, because I did not think that he was beatable," she recalled. "(But ultimately) I beat him. I did. I wasn't trying to.'"

Winfrey also touched on her 25 years hosting a syndicated talk show. She said the ultimate purpose of her show was to let people know that "we really are more alike than we are different."

It was recently announced the esteemed producer, actress and talk show host will join the US version of 60 Minutes as a special contributor.

"Her body of work is extraordinary, including thousands of interviews with people from all walks of life. She is a remarkable and talented woman with a level of integrity that sets her apart and makes her a perfect fit for 60 Minutes," executive producer Jeff Fager said last month.
