Rocky pets face ruff times
A NEW RACQ study has dubbed Central Queensland pet owners the worst in the state, but obviously the report's co-ordinators didn't talk to Clint Wehmeier.
The Rockhampton Dog Obedience Club instructor was yesterday surprised to hear local cat and dog owners had ranked so poorly.
The study found Rockhampton and Central Queensland had the highest rate of pet owners who failed to vaccinate, worm, tick check, micro-chip and register their pets.
It claimed more than half (55%) of the region's pet owners were not fulfilling their responsibilities.
Clint, who is the proud owner of two german shepherds, certainly isn't one to neglect his dogs, Thor and Blaze.
"I have two daughters and the dogs absolutely love playing with them so they are certainly loved," Clint said.
He said both dogs were wormed, tick-free, micro- chipped and vaccinated.
"I make sure my dogs are always well looked after and here at the obedience club dogs must be vaccinated and wormed," he said.
"We also strongly encourage people to micro-chip and register their dogs."
Clint said there had been a dramatic increase in the number of people taking their dogs to the club.
"More and more people are seeking some sort of bond with their animal so they are coming to obedience classes to get that.
"We find all members, new and old, take excellent care of their dogs," he said
"The new owners will gain a better understanding of dogs which will result in better care for animals around the region."
Clint has had dogs for as long as he can remember and has been training with his dogs for at least four years.
"All the dogs I've had or worked with have different personalities and from what I've seen I think Rockhampton people take pretty good care of their animals and pets."
