WE SAY: Why we need more than just an inquiry

OUR VIEW: THE Palmer United Party-led federal Senate inquiry into Queensland governance is without precedence, but not entirely unwarranted.

The Senate agreed this week to hold the inquiry into the Newman Government. It will cover everything from its management of prisons to influence it may exercise over developments.

It is hard to believe, though, that the public inquisition is happening purely because of a wave of complaints by Queenslanders, as PUP suggests.

LETTER OF THE DAY: Savage PUP sinks its teeth in too far

PUP leader Clive Palmer has had spiteful personal clashes with Premier Campbell Newman and Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney. Underlining the personal politics is the fact the Senate investigation, supported by Labor and the Greens, will look at only the LNP Government and not previous Labor administrations.

That is a mistake, politically and morally. The fact is, the Queensland political system needs a reboot.

Moreover, it needs a house of review to add checks and balances to the democratic decision-making process.

In Queensland, the system allows the state government - any government with a majority - as much power as it wishes.

We've seen governments of all colours ride roughshod over democratic process. And we've seen enough.

Queenslanders need a house of review, and the PUP Senate inquiry needs credibility. A marriage could just work.
