Will Stan be Idol man?

SIX years ago, Stan Walker watched in awe as Guy Sebastian claimed the first Australian Idol crown.

Tomorrow, the 19-year-old from Coolangatta will finally have his own shot at the title.

“I was in New Zealand and we were watching Guy and I said to myself, I want to do that one day,” Stan said.

The shop assistant has won over the heart of the nation on the popular Channel 10 show and will appear on tomorrow’s grand final against fellow finalist Hayley Warner.

On the eve of the biggest night of his life, members of Tweed Valley Community Church in Tweed Heads South, of which Stan is a part, have rallied behind him in tremendous fashion.

Youth Leader Sam Spry, who has known Stan the past four years, will be among 20 members of the church travelling to the Sydney Opera House for the performance.

“This is his redemption – he was always being knocked back in talent quests and other gigs. Now he’s known around the nation,” Mr Spry said

“He has always been well-known around Tweed Heads and Coolangatta, but now everyone stops him for aphoto.

“He’s still the same old dude; it hasn’t gone to his head at all.”

Regardless of the outcome tomorrow night, Mr Spry said Stan’s intentions will remain the same.

“Through the show he visited children with cancer in hospital, and it really stuck out to him.

“He wants to be able to help them and other kids in need all he can,” Mr Spry said.

Stan said he wants to be an ambassador for broken people.

“I want to live by actions and not by words.

“I want to be an example for those who have been and who are in the same position that I’ve been in, back in the past, so I want to live by example,” he said.

Should he win, Stan will receive a recording contract, a management deal, a car and a $200,000 Artist Development fund.

There are two ways to vote for Stan.

Either SMS Stan to 19 10 10 or call 1902 55 55 61.

Voting will conclude tomorrow at 8:45pm.

Australian Idol begins at 7.30pm tomorrow night.
