Woman finally has day in court

A WOMAN who was raped and had a child by a family member 17 years ago, finally received justice this week.

The victim was only a teenager when a far-removed family member acting as her carer had a sexual relationship with her in 1995.

The woman, who subsequently gave birth to the older man's child, came forward about the rapes several years later.

Police charged him with two counts of rape and two counts of indecent treatment of a child, but he continually denied committing the offences until the first day of his trial on Monday.

In a shocking turn-around the man, now believed to be in his 50s, pleaded guilty in the District Court in Rockhampton.

But Judge Grant Britton had to adjourn the sentencing of the man until Friday because of further offences he allegedly committed last year after his committal hearing.

Crown prosecutor Joshua Phillips said the man was charged with one count of burglary and one count of retaliation against a witness, namely the female defendant.

Mr Phillips said the man had spent about 500 days in custody after he was charged last year.
