Woman found unconscious in the water at Whitsundays

A 26-YEAR-OLD Chinese tourist is fighting for her life in Mackay Base Hospital after being found unconscious after snorkelling unattended off Hook Island on the Great Barrier Reef.

The RACQ CQ Rescue helicopter flying trauma team yesterday afternoon rushed to the recently reopened Hayman Island just 6 minutes after receiving the call to assist the unconscious woman.

Critical emergency care was administered by the rescue helicopter medical crew at the scene before the patient was flown in an unstable condition to the Mackay Base Hospital under full intensive care monitoring.

RACQ CQ Rescue air crewman Mark Donovan said the quick thinking of fellow tourists who commenced CPR and phoned '000' saved the young woman's life.

He also praised the Hayman Island staff as instrumental with their patient care until the crew from RACQ CQ Rescue arrived.

It is understood the women, wasn't staying on Hayman Island but is holidaying in Australia with her husband.

The woman remained in a serious condition on arrival at the hospital at 5.30pm.
