Woman given probation after five service station drive-offs

A WOMAN who stole petrol and car supplies from four different service stations last year pleaded guilty to five charges in Rockhampton Magistrates Court yesterday.

Janette Louise Mason was charged after she targeted the Brisbane fuel suppliers on dates between September 19 and November 5.

Police prosecutor Manon Barwick told the court Mason stole petrol on two occasions, motor oil, a car battery and five pairs of sunglasses with a total restitution of more than $430.

Ms Barwick said an accomplice in one of the thefts told police they "really needed engine oil because the car was smoking".

On another occasion, the 35-year-old attempted to pay for the petrol but her card was declined so she left the store, the court heard.

"She intended to pay but hadn't done so," Ms Barwick said.

Defence lawyer Shayne Studdert said "she did not have a lot of money at the time".

"There was a drug problem at the time.

"She relocated to Rockhampton for the purpose of trying to sort out her life while she was up here."

Mason pleaded guilty to four counts of stealing and one count of failing to provide identifying particulars.

Magistrate Michael O'Driscoll said Mason's SPER debt was more the $6800 prior to the fresh offending.

Mason was sentenced to 12 months' probation for each of the stealing charges, ordered to pay restitution and fined $300 for failing to provide particulars.
