Woman grabbed by throat, spat on in Coast road rage attack

IN A sickening example of road rage, a man has been jailed after he grabbed a woman by the throat before spitting in her face while other drivers watched on.

On September 4, 2017, Danny Takaratua Pohatu, 47, was tailgating his 44-year-old victim and throwing things at her car until she pulled over near the intersection of Denna St and Bradman Ave, Maroochydore.

Pohatu walked up to her car and as the woman began to get out of her seat, he grabbed her by the throat and pushed her back down.

She pushed Pohatu's chest in retaliation before he spat in her face.

After witnesses including an off-duty police officer intervened, Pohatu drove away.

When Pohatu was interviewed by police, he claimed the woman slapped him twice and spat on him.

Pohatu also showed officers a video he'd filmed after the incident talking through what had happened in case he needed to jog his memory later.

He yesterday pleaded guilty in Maroochydore Magistrates Court to common assault.

Pohatu's lawyer told the court his client was "remorseful" and was suffering after a recent marriage break up.

Magistrate John Parker said there were "no excuses" for the behaviour and sentenced Pohatu to six months' imprisonment.

He will serve two months in custody before the sentence is suspended for 18 months.
