Woman is tragically killed

A WOMAN was tragically killed yesterday in a car accident on the Bruce Highway at Bajool.

The woman, police believe to be in her mid 20s, was the driver of a Ford Falcon sedan when it collided with a semi-trailer at 5.10pm, about 100km south of Six Mile Creek.

Country Inspector Dave Peff said the woman was travelling south, away from Rockhampton, and the truck was travelling North, when the accident occurred.

He said police believe the woman was a resident of the Rockhampton region.

Last night police were faced with the difficult task of trying to determine if there was also an infant inside the car at the time of the crash.

Emergency services cut open the mangled wreck to find there was no baby in the vehicle.

The driver of the semi-trailer was taken to Rockhampton Hospital, complaining of lower back pain.

The highway was shut down for more than an hour, with one-way traffic opening at 6.30pm.

Motorists were diverted through alternative routes at Calliope, Biloela, Westwood and Rockhampton.

Police were still at the scene at 8pm last night.
