Woman killed in head-on collision near Gympie

A HEAD-on collision on the Bruce Highway north of Gympie overnight has left one woman dead and a 14-year-old boy in a critical condition.

Police believe at 9.40pm, a ute was heading south on the highway, near the intersection of Wardell Rd, when it collided with a car carrying four people.

The 40-year-old woman driving the car was pronounced dead at the scene.

Of her three passengers, the 14-year-old boy was airlifted to Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital in a critical condition.

A 16-year-old girl and 16-year-old boy each suffered serious injuries in the crash. 

The 19-year-old driver of the ute received minor injuries.

All three teenagers were taken to Gympie Hospital for treatment.

The Bruce Highway was closed for several hours while the Forensic Crash Unit commenced investigations.
