Women’s health clinic an option for patients

A NEW women's health centre has opened in Maroochydore, in the same building as Paul Stokes' Coastal IVF clinic.

Coastal Women's Health Clinic's Dr Tanya Obertik said Dr Stokes set up the female-only option to help women in a "non-intrusive environment".

"Women feel more comfortable with women," she said. "We know how to relate and we know how scary it is to have issues with women's health."

Women often feel more comfortable presenting for pregnancy checks, discussions about sexual health and for pap smears when female doctors are available, Dr Obertik said

"It's such an intimate conversation to have with someone," she said. "It can be awkward for women to discuss these things so it's really important that they're made to feel at ease. They'll often leave if they're made to feel awkward."

Dr Obertik said the clinic was not there to replace patients' GPs, but would be a supplement. GPs would be sent reports of the investigations or procedures unless the patient requested otherwise, she said.

Importantly, the clinic would provide Mirena contraceptive insertions, Dr Obertik said. These provide women with five years protection against pregnancy and were only offered by a handful of GPs on the Sunshine Coast.

Dr Obertik said GPs who were interested in becoming involved were welcome to make contact.
