Hollywood senior men fear 'witch hunt' in sex scandal

FAMED director and actor Woody Allen is hoping the Harvey Weinstein sex scandal that is engulfing Hollywood will not lead to a "witch hunt".

Disgraced Hollywood heavyweight Weinstein is currently under investigation for sexual assault following allegations from multiple women including some of the industry's biggest names.

The scandal has sparked one of the biggest stories of the year with actors, producers and even politicians quick to condemn the 65-year-old.

But while Allen admitted the revelations were "sad for everybody", the Annie Hall director stopped short of condemning Weinstein, instead warning it could lead to a "tragic situation".

"Tragic for the poor women that were involved, sad for Harvey that his life is so messed up," Allen told the BBC.

"It's just very, very sad and tragic for those poor women that had to go through that.

"You don't want it to lead to a witch hunt atmosphere, a Salem atmosphere, where every guy in an office who winks at a woman is suddenly having to call a lawyer to defend himself.

"There's no winners in that."

Weinstein has been credited with saving Allen's career after the star was accused of molesting his daughter in the 1990s. Allen strongly denies the allegation.

But despite working several films together, Allen said he never heard any claims of "real seriousness" against Weinstein.
