Workers on the move

ALTHOUGH people might say they are happy with their job, a new survey states about 75% of employees are monitoring the workforce.

SEEK's managing director Joe Powell said the results from the Seek Job Market Update were good news for employers who were looking for new applicants because there was more selection.

"However, greater emphasis also needs to be placed on retaining valuable employees," Mr Powell said.

Greg Porter said Porters had no problems retaining their 340 valuable staff.

He said part of the reason staff enjoyed working for Porters was because it was a family owned and run business.

"We focus on celebrating milestones," Mr Porter said.

"We have a 10-year club, a 20-year club, a 30-year club and Glen (pictured) is in the 40-year club.

The SEEK Job Market Update also revealed that 41% of the labour force expected to change roles in the next 12 months and almost half of the workforce have been in their current role for less than two years.

Mr Porter said the average Porters employee had around a six-year tenure time.

"We have a future leaders program ... which outlines the career path for an employee for the next two years," he said.

Outlining career paths and career progression was a good tool for keeping job-hopping Generation Ys on the roster, he said.

"So they will know when they will have all of their assessments, all of their salary reviews and all of their training will be locked in.

"Generation Y are really focused on where they want to be in a few years' time."
