Yellow ribbon lifts awareness for Rural Fire
MORE than 3100 volunteer firefighters across Central Queensland will wear a yellow ribbon to raise awareness of their work today.
Born last year as a protest against the push to sack 57% of paid rural fire service staff who support the Rural Fire Brigades Association Queensland volunteers, the movement has gained a solid following across regional Queensland.
The event heralds the start of the October sitting of State Parliament.
The RFBAQ sends MPs a yellow ribbon to wear on the first sitting day in October so they can show their support for the volunteer firefighters.
There are 35,289 RFBAQ volunteers across the state - 3152 in the Gladstone and Rockhampton areas.
RFBAQ general manager Justin Choveaux said the campaign was a bi-partisan opportunity for Queenslanders to show their support for volunteers who put their lives on the line.
