Yeppen Bridge mooted

THE Annual State Conference of the Pensioners' & Superannuants' League was held last week in Sarina.

The delegates from Gracemere successfully submitted agenda items which were supported by delegates attending the conference.

The Gracemere branch called on the Federal Government to change the formula of adjusting the base rate of pensions for both single and combined to 35% of the average male weekly earnings.

Because the Yeppen Bridge handles a huge volume of traffic from the Bruce, Burnett and Capricorn highways, Gracemere submitted an agenda item which called for necessary steps to upgrade the existing Yeppen Bridge with a four-lane structure. It was supported by conference delegates.

The need for the manning of an ambulance station in Gracemere was also placed before the conference and unanimously supported.

Election of office bearers resulted in Frances Nord being re-elected as president; Sarina's Margaret Franklin in as senior vice-president; and Gracemere's Cherith Weis was elected junior vice-president. Rockhampton's Norma Brinston is a member of the Executive Committee and Pat Fitzgerald was elected to the Appeals Committee which means with a spread of management throughout the State, the group should go from strength to strength.

If residents of the Rockhampton Regional Council area would like to know more about funding under the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) funding scheme, a community Information Workshop is being held on Friday night between 6pm and 9.30pm at the Walter Reid Cultural Centre on the corner of East and Derby streets, Rockhampton.

Whether you are an artist, arts worker, art group or community group and you would like some funding you should attend this workshop.

Notice of intention to attend are required by today to Jenny or Judy on 4936 8344.

The Gracemere Pensioners' & Superannuants' League will hold a meeting on Monday, September 28, in the Guide Headquarters in James Street, Gracemere.

All wishing to attend are advised that there will be a change to the starting time from 9.30am to 9am.

Guest speaker for the morning will be Terry Hill, regional director for Main Roads (Fitzroy) who will address the meeting at 10.30am.

The group expects there to be many questions regarding the changes to traffic which concern the residents of the town.

This is an excellent opportunity to hear directly from the Main Roads regional director himself.

For more information, please phone the secretary on 4933 3516.
