Yeppoon business owners unite to promote village precinct

HE'S NOT the butcher, or the baker, but he is Yeppoon's candlestick maker and one of the many local business owners on the Capricorn Coast who is urging people to support local business.

Chris Duane, owner of Yeppoon's Coastal Funk, was sick and tired of seeing shop front after shop front close in his community which is why he co-founded Shop 4703 more than a year ago, an organisation made up of a group of local Yeppoon businesses that supports local business and aims to promote buying local within the community.

Chris, said it the aim of Shop 4703 organisation was to create a village feel within the town and support other small businesses.

"We saw an opportunity where we really wanted to create a village feel in the town which is where Shop 4703 come from," he said.

"Yeppoon is such a great coastal community and the retail trade was really suffering but working together with the synergy of other businesses really gives you that strength. We want to see each other succeed.

"There's a few shops that have closed recently and in behind those closed doors is a family that's effectively failed and we don't want to see that. We want our community to recognise these people who are giving service to them."

As part of the Shop 4703 initiative, four guided night time Christmas shopping tours have been organised.

Member for Keppel Brittany Lauga said she was a big supporter of the Shop 4703 idea and campaigning the push for people to buy local.

"We know that buying local is good for the economy, it's good for local jobs and it's good for local people," Mrs Lauga said.

"When people spend money in local stores that money is flowing directly into the local economy and that has great benefits. We need to make sure that the dollars that are earned in this region continue to circulate throughout our economy."
