Yeppoon High School students donate blood to save lives
A SMALL group of senior Yeppoon State High School students donated blood for the first time at the Rockhampton Blood Donor Centre on Thursday, November 19.
For two of the five students, the donation was their last act before heading to their graduation ceremony.
One of the students commented on the importance of donating blood remembering a friend who had once needed blood after a cancer diagnosis.
Since the closure of the Red Cross Donor Centre in Yeppoon, Yeppoon High School students haven't had the opportunity to donate as a school organised event.
The event is a testament to the dedicated teaching staff at Yeppoon High.
At the busy end of the school year, staff committed weeks of planning to create this opportunity for students to roll up their sleeves and help their community.
"This gave the students an opportunity to give back to the community," said Justine Dwyer, teacher and organiser of the event.
"I'm very proud of the students' willingness to take time out of their day to help other people."
Current year 11 students already say they are excited about donating next year and staff hope this can become an annual event.
