Yeppoon-Rockhampton Rd fires expected to escalate

UPDATE 5PM: Queensland Fire and Emergency Services rural and urban appliances will remain overnight at a bushfire near Yeppoon Road, Limestone Creek (north-east of Rockhampton).

 The fire, which broke out on Sunday, poses no threat to homes however is expected to burn for several days.

As at 4.15pm, the fire has burnt 650 hectares of vegetation and is travelling in a west-south-westerly direction.

Firefighters have constructed fire breaks up to Moore's Creek and are currently conducting backburning operations.

It is expected there will be increased volumes of smoke during this time, potentially affecting Yeppoon Road. Motorists should drive to conditions and with caution.

Residents in the area should monitor conditions and remain vigilant. If affected by smoke, close doors and windows.

If residents believe their property is under threat, they should phone Triple Zero (000) immediately.

UPDATE 1.30PM: A dozen fire appliances continue efforts to contain a bushfire burning near Yeppoon Road, Limestone Creek (north-east of Rockhampton) today. 

The fire, which broke out on Sunday, is not posing a threat to homes however is expected to burn for several days. 

A helicopter is currently on scene conducting aerial surveillance and firefighters have commenced backburning operations.

It is expected there will be increased volumes of smoke during this time, potentially affecting Yeppoon Road. 

Residents in the area should monitor conditions and remain vigilant. If affected by smoke, close doors and windows.

UPDATE 7AM: QUEENSLAND Fire and Emergency Services expect fires on the Yeppoon-Rockhampton Road to escalate today due to strong winds. 

The Rockhampton-Yeppoon Rd is currently open but officials warn it could be closed throughout today as crews battle multiple fires. 

Motorists are encouraged to take alternate routes if possible to reduce traffic and delays. 

More updates to come throughout the day. 

 

UPDATE 6PM: Several rural and urban crews continue to battle blazes in the Cawarral area.

The Rockhampton-Yeppoon Rd is closed at Access 8 to traffic heading into Rockhampton. 

Police are unsure how long the road will remain closed. 

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesperson said homes in the area were safe. 

EARLIER: Firefighters are battling "multiple fires" along Dairy Inn Rd, Cawarral.

A Queensland Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said one fire was reportedly "close to a home".

The spokesman said a number of grass fires were reported on both sides of the road about 1.30pm.

"We have a couple of crews on scene and more on the way," the spokesman said.

He said the fires could have been deliberately lit.
