Yeppoon snares carnival spoils

WHEN the going is tight, a tournament can come down to the team prepared to keep winning ends, even when the match is already won.

That is how things worked out at the weekend when the Rockhampton Regional Council Mayoral Trophy Mixed Fours was played at the Rockhampton Bowls Club.

Each of the 14 teams entered played two matches of 21 ends and therefore it was always going to be tight with more than one of the fours expected to win both games.

Spokesman for the host club Tony Zonca said in the end it was even tighter than expected with all four of the teams collecting prizemoney, winning both of their games.

It then came down to the number of ends won and a team from Yeppoon, with Sheila Allen, George Ziebell, Daphne Duncan and Ian Lenham, won by a single end.

It was equally hard to separate second from third with the Diggers’ four of Eileen Arnold, Michael Vagg, Doris Vagg and Matt Tonkin taking the runner-up cheque by one end from a team from the host club comprising Nola Thomas, Phil Robinson, Alma Cass and Bob Nibbs.

Unlucky fourth was the Victoria Park four skipped by the wily Fred Carrington.

“That is the way it is. In that first game, you have to win as many ends as you can,” Zonca said.

While Zonca has all the answers, he unfortunately had little input into the final tournament places as his Rockhampton four was beaten by Fred Carrington’s team in the opener.

“He’s a tough nut to crack, old Freddie,” Zonca said.

The four did have better fortune in their other match against a Yeppoon four but Zonca was quick to point out that a lot of the credit was given to Gil Callow.

“Gil pulled off a couple of big game draw shots,” he said.

Zonca said each time Yeppoon tried to take an end with a couple of shots, Callow would draw close to the jack and give the Rockhampton team the advantage.

Unfortunately, not all 16 rinks were filled but nevertheless the competition was successful.

Mayor Brad Carter brought the tournament to an end by presenting prizes.
