Yeppoon to hold CQ meet
YEPPOON Aquatic Centre will host the Central Queensland sprint meet on January 14 at the Cooee Bay Swimming Pool.
It is expected up to 200 entries swimmers will travel from across the region to compete in the event which will be followed by a coaching development clinic on Sunday, January 15.
Yeppoon Aquatic Centre head coach Greg Rogers said the event would be an opportunity to identify new talent and facilitate taking them to another level.
"We already have Queensland champions in the pool and surf here and at the moment Queensland is the benchmark for the rest of the country," he said.
"We are trying to give local talent in the region, including swimmers, coaches and clubs a chance to develop skills and take the talent to the next level."
Rogers said he believed the region was on a roll at the moment and the sprint event on January 14 would offer a display of local ability.
Yeppoon Aquatic Centre leasee Helen Auriac said the centre hoped to build on the event and host it in the following years.
"We've really raised the profile of the centre since Greg joined us in September and we have plans to get the pool operational all year around," she said
"We currently have junior and senior squad training, triathlon training at 5am on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and daily aqua fit classes." Rogers also coaches an adult swim fitness class on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at 9.15am which is suitable for adults wanting to improve their water fitness.
"My fitness has improved so much since training with Greg," Auriac said.
