SCHOOL SPORTS: Yeppoon's Sacred Heart Primary School has won the 2017 Challenge Cup.

The combined performances of its teams in both the rugby league and netball carnivals meant it took home the coveted trophy.

Thirty-one schools from across the Catholic Diocese of Rockhampton were represented at the three-day sporting competition staged at St Brendan's College, Yeppoon.

Emmanuel Catholic Primary School from Mackay took out the rugby league carnival with a 24-6 win over Rockhampton's St Joseph's Park Avenue in the grand final.

Emerald's St Patrick's took the honours in the netball, scoring an 18-12 win over Yeppoon's Sacred Heart Red team in the decider.

A total of 84 rugby league games and 144 netball games were played at this year's Challenge Cup, hosted by the Sacred Heart and St Benedict's Catholic primary schools.

St Benedict's Catholic Primary School principal Tim Collins said it was great to see more than 700 students from Catholic primary schools from across the Diocese which stretches from Bundaberg to Mackay and west to Longreach come together for the event.

"Obviously it's a competition but the spirit in which the carnival is played is wonderful,” he said.

"It's a fantastic opportunity for the whole diocesan family to get together and for the students to mingle and interact.

"It was a super three days and there was lots of positive enthusiasm.”

Mr Collins said the facilities at St Brendan's were great, and it was ideal that both sports could be staged at the one venue.

The Challenge Cup, now in its 12th year, also provided a significant boost for the Capricorn Coast economy.
