A SUNSHINE Coast father has died in a tragic mining accident, leaving a wife and two young sons behind.

Nathaniel Beesley, 32, was working at the Savage River mine in Tasmania when he fell to his death last Friday.

He leaves behind his wife Katie and sons Freddie and Rex, both aged under four, just months after the family moved from England to Australia to make a life on the Sunshine Coast.

Mr Beesley was waiting for a transfer to the Australian Defence Force, after serving on two tours of Afghanistan in the UK Royal Marines.

A family friend said the couple were full of "life and adventure" and had already become part of the Sunshine Coast community.

"They came to live here as he really wanted to create a better life for his little family and his children to grow up," the friend said.

WorkSafe Tasmania is investigating the circumstances behind the tragedy.

Australian Workers Union assistant secretary Robert Flanagan told ABC it was understood the contractor was working in the mine's north pit when he fell.

"It's the union's understanding that the contractors were engaged in scaling operations in part of the mine's operations," he said.

"Scaling operations are undertaken to ensure that loose material can't be dislodged from a work area.

"Any workplace fatality is a tragedy and the union's thoughts are clearly with the family and friends of the deceased worker and we continue to endeavour to ensure that workplaces are as safe as possible."

It was the fourth mining death on the state's west coast since 2013.

Friends have set up a Go Fund Me page to raise funds for the family.

Donors have already raised more than $14,400 in one day.
