Young Diamonds shine at Sullivan's Carnival

NETBALL: The Emerald Diamonds shone bright at the annual Sullivan's Carnival in Rockhampton at the weekend.

Playing in Junior F Division 2, the Diamonds won the overall trophy for the highest goal average - an incredible 775%.

It was an amazing performance from the young side which is playing its first year of competitive netball, having just come out of the NetSetGO program.

The Diamonds took out the top prize with a collective scoreline of 71-8 from its seven games.

They were among more than 100 junior and senior teams from across Central Queensland that converged on Jardine Park for two full days of action-packed netball.

The senior honours were shared across the region, with Angels Deities winning the Senior A division, Biloela Buddies the Senior B and Blackwater Black Magic the Senior C.

Frenchville junior teams enjoyed a good weekend, winning four divisions.

Among the teams competing were the Devils Juniors, which is made up of sisters and cousins from the Upton, Sandilands, Busk, Webley, Window, Marks and McPherson families from Rockhampton, Mackay, Emerald and Blackwater.

They get together to compete at both the Sullivan's and the Rockhampton Red Rooster Rep Carnival each year.

Rockhampton Netball's operations manager Leesa Friske said the weekend carnival was incredibly well received by all involved.

"It was the best carnival ever. It just ran so smoothly and we had a lot of positive feedback from everyone who attended,” she said.

"A carnival like this couldn't happen without our volunteers and without our carnival committee of Jody Barnes, Trudy Landsberg and Anne Hinchliffe who contribute hours and hours of their time.

"The Emerald Diamonds were fantastic and to see the smiles on their faces when they won the trophy was really special.”
