Lawson Nobbs, 17, ready to take on top cowboys

LOOK out cowboys, Lawson Nobbs is here to steal your thunder.

The up-and-coming 17-year-old bull rider has local cowboys shaking in their boots as he continues to impress in the rodeo ring.

All eyes were on Nobbs on Friday night as the rising star showed his bull who was boss in round eight of the Young Guns Rodeo Series at the Great Western Hotel.

GWH arena manager Brian Duggan said if Nobbs could maintain his impressive form, experienced bull riders would need to watch their backs.

"Lawson is doing extremely well," Duggan said.

"He was the standout of the night and won the rookie bull ride before going on to take out the junior bull ride as well.

"He's still a junior but is competing in the Top Guns Rodeo Series as well and doing great. The open cowboys better watch out."

While the youngster is dominating the Young Guns contest, his success also extends to the Central Region Cowboys Association competition where Duggan said he recently tied in first place with Lucas McKenzie.

Duggan also praised Nick Walsh for his gutsy performance on Friday night.

"Nick was injured pretty badly a little while a go and Friday night was about his first or second ride back," he said. "He did well and placed first in the saddle bronc event."

Rodeo action will return to the Great Western on Saturday, October 25 when local cowboys and girls dust off their favourite pink chaps, hats and checked shirts for the annual Rockhampton Girls Grammar School Tough Enough to Wear Pink bulls and barrels event.
