Young rider Roks experienced rivals with Classic success

AMBER Patteson has had a very successful long weekend and it isn't over yet.

The 15-year-old barrel racer from Alton Downs proved a real surprise packet at the Cap Coast Classic Futurity at Lazy Acres over the weekend.

Amber has only been competing in barrel racing for four years but she proved she has an extremely bright future by beating a number of far more experienced riders to win the prestigious event.

What's more impressive is she did so on Razzle Rok, a four-year-old gelding that she has only been working with for six months.

Despite the limited preparation, Amber looked comfortable and relaxed as she guided the young gelding around the three barrels to finish second in both Round 1 on Saturday and Round 2 yesterday in matching times of 18.6 seconds.

That performance was good enough for her to finish overall winner on average and take home the Futurity trophy saddle.

It was Amber's first Futurity win but judging by her ability to work as one with her horse, it won't be the last.

"I've only had Razzle Rok for around six months," Amber said.

"I got him at the end of December last year. He is one of the best horses I have on my three-horse team.

"He's very responsive and very easy to work with. Some horses are better to work with and he is one of those who make it easy. Others can be difficult, they want to fight with you."

Amber said she was amazed with the win but delighted her hard work with her new horse was reaping rewards.

"It is very overwhelming," she said.

"All my hard work over the last six months has paid off."

The Futurity wasn't Amber's only win of the weekend.

She also won the Rookie barrel race at the Great Western's Young Guns event on Friday night, riding Hurricane Harry to victory.

Amber however has had to put her celebrations on hold to focus on competing in the Dalarnill CRC Rodeo today.

Having already notched victories Hurricane Harry and Razzle Rok, Amber will be looking to make it three from three when she rides Gypsy in the junior barrel race.
