Young thief's $58 fraud scheme ends with $300 fine

THE fraud was as simple as it was brazen.

The first step was to buy an item from K-Mart, get a receipt and leave the store. Then, after a few days, return to the store, select a new, identical item and take it to the refund counter with the original receipt to claim a refund.

That is how Jasmine Maree Wyeth fleeced K-Mart in North Ipswich out of $58 and why she found herself in court charged with fraud.

At Ipswich Magistrates Court, the 22-year-old pleaded guilty to the offence which took place on April 21.

Defence lawyer Amy Little said Wyeth was a single parent who was in between jobs when her client committed the crime.

Ms Little said Wyeth regretted her actions.

Magistrate Barry Cosgrove warned Wyeth if she continued to steal she could face time in jail.

She was fined $300 and ordered to pay $58 in restitution. No convictions were recorded.
