Zeke's friends in brave quest to raise funds

EIGHT of Zeke Douglas's close friends, some whom were with him the night he was struck by a golf club, are behind a fundraiser for the family.

The brave teenagers say they are determined to raise cash to help Zeke's family through the incredibly tragic time.

It's also a way to help them cope as the realisation their mate since primary school won't be coming back.

Five of them, Hayley Flett, Jordan Bartlett, Rhianna Boyce, Teleisha Hart and Shelby spoke to the Daily about how they planned to "stand together as a family" for Zeke's younger siblings.

Teleisha said she was Zeke's girlfriend for two weeks before the accident, although they had been friends for years.

She has written his name and hashtag across her chest and has "I love you Zeke" penned on her arm.

Teleisha said she came up with the idea of a Gofundme page for Zeke, which reached its $5000 goal in less than 24 hours.

They have now extended the goal to $10,000.

"It's been mind-blowing. We are so grateful to the Sunshine Coast," one said and the others agreed.

It started as a fun, Saturday night sleepover at Rhianna's house, which is across the road from the Horton Park Golf Course.

Some, including Zeke, decided to go toading in the late evening. It was their first time.

Rhianna stayed behind when Zeke's mum arrived to pick him up. Rhianna tried to contact him on his phone when one of the group said he had been hurt.

"They said he was unconscious," Rhianna said.

The teens ran over to the golf course with Zeke's mum and found him lying on his ground.

"I felt for his pulse and I felt a light one. That's when I screamed," Rhianna said.

Zeke's mother began performing CPR, with the help of some of the other youths while others tried to call an ambulance.

Hayley rushed to try and find a yard where the ambulance could gain easy access.

Despite their panic and fear, the teenagers worked together.

"We just wanted to do what we could to help Zeke," Hayley said.

After the ambulance took Zeke away, the teenagers were taken to the police station for questioning.

None of them have returned to school this week.

They heard on Tuesday their good friend, who was always full of life, had died.

The teens plan to "stick together" through the next months and years and support each other,

"We are like a family now," Hayley said.

"Zeke touched so many lives.

"We want to do as much as we can to help Zeke's family."

They have made caps, with RIP Zeke on it, which they say "almost everyone at school has now".
